By Steve Gorecki Free Day Moved to October 5 Due to the upcoming Chicago visit of Pope John Paul II, the President's office released an announcement this week stating the changing of the holiday observance of St. Vincent DePaul Day from Monday, October 8 to Friday, October 5. The university's action will allow for the DePaul holiday to directly coincide with the expected October 4, 5, and 6th dates scheduled for the Pope's visit, and will eliminate any unnecessary disruptions of the appointed number of class days scheduled for the fall quarter. According to the Very Rev. John R. Cortelyou, C.M., the decision was made by the academic calendar committee and was totally supported by the administration. The President said, "The decision to hold classes on Monday and move the holiday up to the day of the Pope's scheduled visit was done because it was felt that we could not afford to lose another class day on Friday resulting from the expected great interest and probable transportation I problems stemming from the Pope's visit, and then not have class again on Monday in the traditional observance of St. Vincent DePaul Day. "Therefore, to enable the comDlete satisfaction of all persons interested in witnessing the Pope's visit, to minimize the difficulties probable in obtaining reliable transportation to and from classes on Friday, and to eliminate the need for losing another class day as a result, the holiday observance change was a necessary decision."According to the announcement from the President's office, then, the importance of the change will be to allow for a simultaneous observation of St. Vincent DePaul Day and will enable anyone interested in seeing the Pope to do so without missing any additional class time in regards to the Monday, Wednesday, Friday sequence of the class schedule. In addition to eliminating any possible disruptions in class schedules, the change will also enable all interested students CTA passes will eoon become svsllsble to all students, faculty, and staff of DePaul University. These passes will entitle passengers to unllmltsd rides for an entire month. Pssses can be purchased at either campus through the Cashier's Office. As of yet there have been no formal invitations sent out to respective faculty or university administrators requesting DePaul representation. However, due to the current complexities and intensive planning still in process for the visit, it is thought that invitations will likely be forthcoming to various civic, community, political and religious groups and persons after other more predominant preparations have been completed. Fr. Cortelyou said, "I would suspect that we would get some type of invitation shortly to one of the formal functions of the papal visit, once the archdiocese and all others involved have completed much of the more immediate preparations and planning. "These passes will be available between 2:00 and 4:00 on Monday and Tuesday of next week at the cashier's office," according to Kathy Jones, head cashier at Lewis Center. The cashier's office is handling bus passes since they are best equipped to handle a large volume of money. The price for a pass is $25 which entitles the buyer to unlimited rides on the CTA for an entire month. The idea for having passes came about last year when the CTA offered them to large business groups. A survey was taken among DePaul students late last year, and in August bus passes were offered to faculty and staff members. However, only 35 to 40 were sold. "Hopefully, it will pick up with the students," said Jones. Three hundred passes will be ordered for the university, 150 for the uptown campus and 150 for the downtown campus. These passes will be sold on a "first come, first serve" bases. Passes will be sold on the last Tuesday and Wednesday See Sports Transit Passes Available Soon of each month to go into effect for the following month. The passes being sold the 25th and 26th of September will go into effect for October. According to Jones, "if you miss getting one this time, you'll have to wait until the last Tuesday and Wednesday of October to get a pass for November." Selling CTA passes will be worked on an experimental basis until December. According to Jones, more passes can be ordered next month if the demand is there. On the other hand, if few people want them, the order can be reduced. If by December passes are so unpopular, the university will not order more for the next quarter. "We're hoping for a good response," stated Jones, and the cashier's office will continue to handle it as long as it "does not cause problems." DePaul's law school handled the selling of their own CTA passes last school year, but might drop their program to let the cashier's office handle it for the whole University. If a student, faculty or staff member wishes to pay the $25 by check, some form of I.D. will be necessary. No identification is needed when paying in cash. Also, no CTA passes will be held, as they may prove to be in great demand.
