Peggy Clark, director of special services in student affairs, has assumed the position of acting director of Campus Ministry. Former director Rev. Thomas Grace, C.M., resigned in the spring. Fr. Grace stepped down from the position after eight years in order to devote more time to his ministry. "It has given me more of an opportunity to be with students and faculty," he added. By Murrey Jacobson and Joseph Lowery A last minute vote by the City Council has given DePaul a second chance to purchase the Goldblatt building as an extension of its Loop Campus. By deferring a key vote late Thursday afternoon, the City Council prevented an immediate decision that would have legally dictated that the Goldblatt building at State Street and Jackson Boulevard be razed. Sawyer, Richardson Meet Mayor Eugene Sawyer, who originally backed a proposal that would make the Goldblatt's site available for a new federal office building, met with DePaul President Rev. John T. Richardson, C.M., on Wednesday. That meeting, Sawyer said, was critical in persuading him to postpone a vote on the federal proposal. "We met with the DePaul people and with the Greater State Street Council, and it was communicated to us that this [Goldblatt's] site would be a desirable site for what DePaul wanted to do," Sawyer explained at a press conference in City Hall. "We are extremely pleased with the DePaul people." "We're very pleased with the speed with which Mayor Sawyer acted on this," Fr. Richardson said. "We took a good hard look at Goldblatt's, and we presented our plans to the Mayor. Although much work and effort was put in by his administration to make possible another significant project, Mayor Sawyer took time from his very busy schedule to sit down with me and other DePaul officials...to hear our plans for the use of the building." The university began looking at the possibility of bidding on the Goldblatt's building last winter, but submitted its first formal request to the city on Sept. 14, said Ken McHugh, vice president for business and finance. "We were late entries in this process," McHugh explained. "Our interest peaked at a time when the city had already set other things in motion." Some of the plans for the year include a new 7 pm mass on Sundays that will eventually be run entirely by the students, prayer breakfasts, and outreach programs. Students will be encouraged to take part in social activities, which include Hunger Awareness Week, Global Awareness Week, and the Diner's Club, as well as other volunteer programs. "We want the campus ministry seen as the presence of the Catholic church on campus," said Clark. "We're here for the students and their issues." "I've never done anything quite like this before. The time is right, here at DePaul," added Jones.
