The Barn Damaged By Fire cause undetermined but arson possible At 7:55 a.m. on Saturday, December 23 the first alarm of an eventual 3-11 alarm fire was sounded. The College Theatre otherwise known as the Barn was in flames. Eight minutes after the first alarm was sounded the firemen arrived on the scene. Four hours and 25 minutes later the fire was under control after having brought damage estimated at $75,000. Twelve fire engines, five hook and ladders, three snorkels and other assorted vehicles were on hand to fight the four-hour blaze. After the smoke had cleared an arson squad under the direction of chief Valiquet of the Chicago Fire Department began an investigation of the blaze. They said later that the cause of the fire was undetermined they did not rule out arson as a possibility. The fire began in the rear of the building in the stage area, and worked out to gut most of the interior. There LNH] was no significant damage to the exterior of the building, except for the holes which were chopped into the roof at the back of the building by the fire department. The building, which was the oldest legitimate theater in the Chicago area, was used by the newly formed DePaul Musical Theater Company, MUTECO, for their productions. The facilities which the Bam offered were shared by the ROTC, which used the area as a drill hall. The building also was the scene of DePaul Academy as well as University intramural basketball games.
