Hellena Smejda and Dennis Boy were named Editors-in-Chief of the DePaulia and DePaulian respectively, at the annual Publications Dinner held at The Red Star Inn. Michael Walters, former Editor-inChief of The DePaulia, and Linda Mays were named Associate Editors of The DePaulia. Gerry Tofel, former photographic assistant of the DePaulian, was named its Associate Editor. The dinner this year was held in The Red Star Inn at 1528 N. Clark St. in Chicago. The dinner had been held in former years at The Edgewater Beach Hotel. There were about 35 people at the dinner. Among them: Mrs. Marilyn Moats Kennedy, moderator of Student Publications and member of the Publications Board Dr. Faulhaber, a professor of Economics and also a member of the Board Janice Sunday, business manager of Student Publications and a member of the Board Patrick Logan, former publications staff member and member of the Publications Board, were also on hand. This year's editors were for the first time in DePaul history selected by a Publications Board. The Board was an outgrowth of last year's disapproval of the appointment of Michael Walters as Dedication Ceremonies (See Editorial Page 4) (Pictures See Center Fold) Golf Team Wins Title (See Page 11) Black Student Union (See Page 3) Movie Review (See Page 9) THE DEPAULIA VOLUME XLVI, NUMBER 23 DePAUL UNIVERSITY, CHICAGO MAY 24, 1968 SMEJDA, BOY: NEW EDITORS editor-in-chief. Students seeking editorial positions on the two publications were asked to submit petitions to the board no later than Wednesday, May 8, 1968. The petitioners met with members of the board on Sunday, May 19, for an interview. The editors were selected by the board. Dean Saurman, Dean of Men on the Downtown Campus, was unable to attend the dinner on Wednesday. Fr. James Galvin, Dean of Men on the Lincoln Park Campus, did, however, attend the dinner. The guests dined on German pot roast, noodles, sweet and sour cabbage and dumplings. The dinĀ TO THE 1968 GRADUATING CLASS De PAUL UNIVERSITY ner got under way at 6:30 p.m. The names of the new editors were announced at 8 p.m. Until this time an aura of expectation hung over the dining hall in the Red Star Inn. Former editors were asked to make a few comments prior to the announcement of the new editors. William Hottendorf, editor of The DePaulian, thanked his staff for the fine work they had done this past year. Michael Walters, editor of The DePaulia, took the opportunity to make what he termed personal remarks. He thanked the printer, THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON Few moments equal the joy, the satisfaction and the fulfillment of graduation. It is a personal and permanent victory, an honor to last a lifetime. To each of you I extend ray sincere congratulations. The time is past when our national interests could be served by a few who elected to make their country's affairs their own. The complexity of our age and the particular burden history has thrust upon us to preserve freedom where it exists and to foster it where it does not demands every American hand and every American heart. The greatest responsibility falls to those who have the most to give. I cannot tell you the extent of America's influence in shaping the new order of world affairs though I believe it will be great. I cannot measure our national ability to abolish ignorance and sickness and injustice wherever these ancient enemies degrade humanity though I believe it is limitless. I cannot predict that America's future will match and exceed the brilliance of her past though I believe it will. The answers will not come in my lifetime, but in the future your future. I am confident that you who have proved your ability to achieve, to endure, and to win, will serve that future with distinction. "Nothing in the world is as powerful as an idea whose time has come VT~ Victor Hugo Ray Langen, for the help he had given the fledgling staff, and apologized for the rudness he had shown to the printer in the first weeks after his appointment. The announcements were made with the associate editor of The DePaulian first, then the editor. The same format was followed for the newspaper. Again, the Editor-in-Chief of The DePaulia for the next year is Hellena Smejda. The Associate Editors are Michael Walters and Linda Mays. The Editor-in-Chief of The DePaulian is Dennis Boy.
