Buy Your Homecoming Bid Now! XXVII—No. 8 Noted Band Spotlights Homecoming You may call it a stroke of genius, an upset, a work of art, or a miracle. DePaul has triumphed again in securing none other than HAL McINTYRE and his orchestra to entertain at the annual homecoming on November 20. He replaces Claude Thorn-hill, who, due to unforeseen circumstances will not appear at the homecoming as previously stated. Hal Mclntyre is one of today's brightest stars on the musical horizon. He is a young and personable saxophonist and bandleader, whose MGM records and jam-packed personal appearances have made him a standout. He is also the only leader of major standing to have gone overseas for USO to entertain the fighting GIs on the war fronts. Student of Goodman and Miller Hal was a student of such notables as Benny Goodman and the late Glenn Miller. It was because these outstanding musicians realized the superb talent of young and handsome Hal that he has achieved what every young bandleader dreams about —success in a very short time. Hal has not only played for thousands of fighting GIs in different countries, but has made several apearances in some of the most fashionable places in the U.S. One of Hal's first dates was late in 1941 at the Glen Island Casino in Larchmont, known then and today as the "cradle of great bands." Nationwide Sensation From there it was a short step to the Comodore Hotel in New York and a recording contract with Victor. The records clicked, the films beckoned and the Mclntyres went on to make four feature-length movies at the Columbia studios. While in Hollywood, he performed at the band mecca, the Palladium. It is one of the pinnacles all bgnds strive for and he has since apeared at others— the Sherman in Chicago, the Paramount and Strand Theatres on Broadway, Frank Daily's Meadowbrook, the Casa Man ana in Culver City, and many others. His orchestra was starred on a network comercial sponsored by Eversharp. After a few years he switched recording affiliations to Cosmo, and became that label's top band. He now turns out VOL.<p>MCINTYRE BETTY NORTON, female vocalist discs for M-G-M records. One honor Hall cherishes was his selection to play for the President's Birthday Ball in Washington, D.C., at which the late F.D.R. and Mrs. Roosevelt appeared. Accompanying Hal will be charming Betty Norton and CHICAGO, ILLINOIS CLAUDE THOBWHILL FRESHMAN FROLIC TONIGHT HAL McINTYRE Frankie Lester, the popular vocalists with voices that have thrilled thousands with the music of Hal Mclntyre. Alumni-Varsity Clash The gala event this year is one with a special added atraction that should appeal to all. Prior to the dance which will commence at 9:30 p. m. there will be featured a varsity versus alumni basketball game at the auditorium. Among the alumni participating are both Mikans, Kachan, Neu and Jorgenson. The admision price to the game is $1.00 per couple, if a bid to the dance has ben purchased. Those desiring to witness the game and have not purchased bids to the dance will be admitted regardless, at the price of $1.00 per person. Basketball Passes on sale Monday REPLACES NOVEMBER 5, 1948 Lord, Lady Beanie Will Rule Tonight To officially climax their four weeks of initiation, the frosh will hold their Freshmen Frolic tonight in the Auditorium, 2231 Sheffield. Reigning over the survivors of this afternoon's Push-Bail game will be "Lord Lady Beanie" who will be elected today and will be announced at the height of festivities.Admission is the presentation of the classical green beanie. However, non-frosh, and nonuniversity students may attend for the small sum of $1.00. Chairman of the Frolic, John Sowinski, and his committeemen, Bob Clarke, John Danno, Pat Carraher, Mary Lou Culhane, Peter Spina, Peggy Ahearn, Spence Johnson, Ken Bzoch and Doris Herman promise an evening full of entertainment.Clay Harvey's 10 piece orchestra and its feminine vocalist will provide the musical score. Dancing will begin at 9:00. Refreshments, beer and soft drinks, will also be on hand. STUDENTS START STUDYING FOR MID-TERM EXAMS On November 10th, 11th and 12th midsemester examinations will be held throughout the school. The tests will take place during regular class meetings. It will be then that DePaul takes on a "new look" in full. Replacing the cheery smiles, the clowning antics and the wise cracks will be furrowed brows, gnawed fingernails and pencils with erasers worn thin. The first set of tests always hits the student body as quite a shock since it seems that you've hardly had time to renew old acquaintances when, from out of nowhere, up pops a notice that "T-day" is here. And so we extend this simple bit of advice to all interested parties: "get out those beaten-up notes, prepare to burn the midnight oil and—go forward students make your 'mark' in life!"
