the Volume 36, Number 7 Important Matters Covered i. The test was administered to approximately twenty students at DePaui who were then completing their fourth semester in Fundamentals of Music Theory under the guidance of Mr. Shapiro. This course is considered the most important in the curriculum for those students who are majoring in music as it is a foundation course, and is a prerequisite for all musicians seeking a degree. The course is carried for four semesters giving four credit hours each semester. It requires three class hours and is broken down into three divisions theoretical harmony, keyboard harmony, and dictation. DePaul's School of Music Ranks High in National Examination Once again The Music School of DePaui has brought honors upon the University. Last spring the School of Music ranked outstandingly high in a national test in which it participated with 139 member schools of the National Association of Schools of Music. Those schools participating in the test, which was conducted under the supervision of the University of Minnesota Bureau of Institutional Research, were broken down into eleven different categories composed of regional districts as well as types of institutions such as universities, conservatories and music schools. The test was a measure of basic skills in interval, chord and rhythm recognition. Those students who took the test did so at their respective institutions where they were given printed forms for answering purposes. These forms were then returned to Minnesota where they were graded and the results tabulated. Alpha Chi to Present Two Bands at AXmen's Swing Theoretical harmony is that which is written while keyboard harmony is the student's recognition of chords played in progression. Dictation, the division of the course which was emphasized in the test is defined as the aural adaptation of written theoretical work. Ratings Used The NASM examinations were rated according to interval, chard, and rhythm recognition. The interval portion of the exam largely composed the contestant's ability to recognize the difference in pitch between two tones, while the chord testing consisted of classifying chord structures. For this part of the exam Mr. Shapiro played chord structures on the piano which contestants were expected to recognize and answer accordingly. The rhythm testing was a measure of the student's ability to recognize a rhythmic pattern with an error in it. Each contestant's printed form contained erroneous rhythmic patterns. When the correct version was played, they were to detect the error before them and indicate what it was. As will be noted in the chart below, DePaul's averages in all parts of the examination were oustandingly higher than the averages in both the national and highest division categories. November eighth will be the day DePaulites will witness another Alpha Chi first. Mid-terms will be over and every one will be looking for a palce to go and let loose. They will not have to look far because on Friday night the brothers of Alpha Chi will proudly present their "AXmen's Swing." The special at re of the night's estivities will be continuous music provided by two bands, a "first" at a DePaui gym dance. Dance music will be provided by a DePaui favorite, Puff Cannnon and his orchestra. During intermission the dance patrons will be entertained by Eddie Arnold and his jazz quintet. The jazz quintet consists of its leader Eddie Arnold on the piano, Bud Smith on drums, John Thompson on the sax, Willie Oggletree on trumpet and Herman Davis on bass. Jazz Stars Most of the band members have played with such jazz greats as internationally known Cab Callaway, Mugsy Spanier, Louis Armstrong, Jim McParttand, Earl Hines and Fletcher Butler. Eddie Arnold and- his quintet are currently appearing at many of the well known jazz spots along our city's North Shore.
